  • Last week, Kerry, Cory and I attended the Kevin James and Ray Romano comedy show at the Sacramento Community Theater. Unlike the 50 million people (okay a bit of an exaggeration) in the audience who were snapping photos, and even one woman who used her phone to film almost the entire thing before she got into trouble, I chose to enjoy the show and obey the request of the artists and not take any photos. (My photo of our tickets will have to do - We did have Row A, seats 1-3 - pretty stoked about that!)

    I loved watching Everybody Loves Raymond and who doesn't like Kevin James?! The show started out with an intro act for about 20 minutes, then Ray came on for a good 45 minutes, followed by Kevin for a good hour, then Ray came back out and the two of them together worked the crowd for another good half hour. It's the first show I've been to at the Community theater is a very long time. And it was packed. I think the last time Cory and I had been there was for Seinfeld's standup show.

    I can never resist a good comedy act!

  • This last month for book club we met at Kim's house to discuss Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. This book was about World War II, the Holocaust and contemporary Paris. In modern-day Paris, a journalist finds her life becoming entwined with a young girl whose family was torn apart during the notorious Vel' d'Hiv Roundup in 1942. The chapters switched back and forth between young Sarah and journalist Julia, alternating between the past and the present.

    There were several themes to this book, many secrets, and an obvious morale to the story..."remember and never forget". I think we all agreed that the ending was left unfinished and didn't really have a firm closure to the story. Some of made our own (desired) conclusions. All in all, a good read and while the author took some liberties with how the history was told through a modern day setting, it was good to read about a portion of French history that we often don't hear about. I for one, was unaware of many of the factual points brought out in the book.

  • What is the difference between Olive Oil and extra-virgin Olive Oil? I recently read in my March 2012 issue of Clean eating the difference between olive oil and extra-virgin olive oil. According to the magazine, "extra-virgin refers to first cold pressing of olives to retrieve the oil - the resulting oil is unrefined and virtually unprocessed. To create regular olive oil, the oil is then processed which diminishes or removes many of the olive's nutrients." Did you know that one of the most valuable nutrients lost is called oleocanthal? This is an anti-inflammatory natural compound that is similar in function to ibuprofen. So to get the maximum anti-inflammatory benefits, opt for the unrefined extra-virgin olive oil.

    Yes, I'm asking you to be flexible. Not in the bendable gymnast sort of way, but in the 'don't get so set in your ways that you can't adapt to change' way. Really, I'm asking myself to do this. My personality has me constantly planning the future. I like to be prepared for whatever might come my way, so I think, and I picture, and I plan, and I plan some more. Sometimes this serves me well, especially when whatever I'm planning for takes preparation, but usually this causes more harm than good. When I plan to the max, I don't leave my thinking open to the possibility of other paths and outcomes. I leave myself open for disappointment when things don't turn out as I thought. Bad move, me! I am trying to embrace the unknown (especially as it relates to having a new little baby) and welcome the reality that things hardly ever go as planned. Instead of picturing my "perfect" scenario, I just want to be open to whatever may come, and go with it!

  • Raspberry Brownie Dessert is my recipe of the week. It was a very easy dessert to make and only calls for 4 ingredients (6 ingredients if you count the brownie mix ingredients). The cool-time of the brownies is really the only time factor you have to consider, but otherwise, the prep time if less than 20 minutes tops.

    I found this recipe in Taste of Home's Fast Fixes with Mixes cookbook.

    Ingredient List:
    1 package fudge brownie mix (13x9 pan size)
    2 cups heavy whipping cream, divided
    1 package (3.3 oz) instant white chocolate pudding mix
    1 can (21 oz) raspberry pie filling

    1. Prepare and bake the brownies according to the package directions. Let cool completely.
    2. In a small bowl, combine 1 cup cream and pudding mix; stir for 2 minutes or until very thick. In a small mixing bowl, beat remaining cream until stiff peaks form; fold into pudding. Carefully spread over brownies; top with pie filling. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before cutting.

    Makes 15-18 servings.

    I couldn't find white chocolate pudding so I substituted French Vanilla. And I couldn't find raspberry pie filling so I used strawberry pie filling. I think it would have tasted better with the white chocolate pudding, but it was still good.
